Sleep Better with Essential Oil Aromatherapy

Essential oils – who needs them?

If you believe in the sleep-inducing properties of these natural plant essences, the answer is a lot more people than realize the benefit of using them.

Botanicals for the Bedroom

It turns out that giving you a chemical-free method for cleaning your mattress isn’t the only way essential oils can help you sleep better. There’s even more than one way to access the sleep-inducing effect of essential oils. Though you can find plenty of recipes for adding oils to your food, we’re going with an external approach for our purposes.

Apply to the skin. If you’re going to put an essential oil on your skin, be sure to do your research. Some will make your skin extremely sensitive to light, so they shouldn’t be applied right before you go out into the sun. Others can be irritating to the skin. It’s not uncommon to dilute these very potent oils by mixing them with non-perfumed natural bases like almond, olive, or coconut oil and then rubbing the combination into the skin.

Diffuse in the air. An air diffuser is an easy method for getting soothing oils into your bloodstream. Just a few drops will deliver long-lasting therapeutic aromatherapy to your room or home. Just be sure that you’re using all-natural oils that don’t contain any synthetic ingredients.

Sleep-Specific Scents

Name an aspect of the human condition, and you can find an essential oil used for its treatment. When it’s sleep you’re seeking, it’s not enough to just pick your favorite scent. These essential oils are renowned for their established sleep-enhancing qualities.

Lavender

It smells lovely and may lead to beautiful dreams. Lavender is a member of the mint family, and it’s used to make one of the most popular and well-known essential oils. Lavender’s uses are numerous and its benefits many, so get comfortable using it in the laundry, bath and bedroom.

Vetiver

If you’re plagued by a rush of anxiety or emotions when it’s time to sleep, Vetiver can help. The fragrance is unusual, but it has a calming, grounding effect that promotes restful sleep.

Chamomile

You’ve had it in a tea – now get more impact from Chamomile’s concentrated form. Chamomile is gentle enough for use in restless children, and it will lull even the most alert among us into a calming, relaxing, peaceful state.

Sandalwood

Sandalwood not only smells amazing – it’s also scientifically proven to induce sleep. Combine sandalwood with less pricey oils to achieve maximum benefit at a reasonable cost.

Cedarwood

While other oils create a floral atmosphere, Cedarwood is as woodsy as it sounds. You can use this oil on the skin or in a diffuser to encourage the pineal gland to release melatonin – which you’ll recognize as a natural sleep aid.

Valerian

Valerian is another herbal remedy commonly used to treat sleep disorders. The essential oil will help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
