You might expect mattress makers only to be concerned with how peacefully you sleep, but Serta has launched a campaign focused on waking life. In a new campaign, Serta is asking Americans to “Declare Peace” in the bedroom. This is in response to this year’s Sleep in America poll, conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, which revealed that almost half of Americans report spending less than an hour a day feeling relaxed. Given that between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder and 35% of adults get less than seven hours of sleep each night, this is a troubling revelation.
As the #1 mattress manufacturer in the United States, Serta knows a thing or two about the importance of adequate sleep. They’re not the first to notice that Americans’ relationship with sleep has been suffering. In our always-on culture, even the most disciplined among us struggle to draw boundaries, especially when it comes to technology. Nodding off to the rays of your smartphone only to be roused by its alarm can override your natural sleep-wake cycle. It’s better to let your circadian rhythms rule the night by putting biological systems back in control. Following Serta’s lead, we can make our lives more restful, both day and night, by making our bedrooms more peaceful.
If you’re not currently in love with your bedroom, there are tons of things you can do to make it more peaceful and conducive to sleep.
Both the orientation of your room and the stuff you have in it impact the zen level of your sleep space. If your bedroom makes you anxious or has a funky flow, consider rearranging. Once you have your furniture oriented optimally, consider adding a few plants or crystals. Might sound crunchy, but if it works, that Himalayan salt crystal lamp will be well worth it.
Banish those allergens! Nothing keeps you awake quite like a dusty, sneeze-inducing space. Even when you’re maintaining a clean and tidy bedroom – and you’d be in the minority – it’s still essential to deep-clean your mattress twice a year. This will not only improve the quality of your sleep each night but also extend the life of your bed.
Temperature is one of the easiest environmental factors to regulate, so make sure you’re exerting full control. If things get too hot, use these tricks to cool off. Set the thermostat to keep your room cooler at night and use a variety of layers to fine-tune your nighttime temperature.
Don’t be embarrassed if you’ve been slacking on one of the cardinal rules of sleep. We’re all guilty from time to time. But once you’ve identified your weakness, nip it in the bud. Review the tenets of basic sleep hygiene and start resisting the urge to check Facebook in bed or to lay down with your laptop.
If your bed keeps you up at night, it’s time to face facts. It’s normal to put off a big purchase like a new mattress, but suffering sleep means the time has come to prioritize your shopping list. Start your mattress-shopping process at home by documenting what you know you want – and don’t want – in a new mattress. Then take your list to a no-pressure mattress store where you can test-drive beds within your price range. Finally, purchase your new sleep surface from the retailer who offers the lowest mattress prices in the country.
Once you’ve set the stage for restful sleep, it all comes down to putting in the time. We all get busy, but you’re the only one who can draw the boundaries that will protect your sleep. Try to rack up more peaceful quiet time than the other 50% of American adults. This will give your system time to power down naturally. You’ll wake up more alert, better rested, and with fewer ailments than those who struggle to slow down.

After a great experience purchasing our mattress with you 2 years ago, we returned recently to purchase one for our daughter (her first big girl bed!). Thank you Don for helping us with our purchase!
