It’s funny what a renowned rite of passage bed-making is. It’s like you learn to crawl, how to walk, and then the next most important thing is making your bed. Parents are obsessed with it and kids hate it. The thing is, that conversation is about a lot more than keeping your room clean. Your parents are envisioning the person you’re going to be when you grow up. And if you turn into a person who doesn’t make their bed as an adult, will they even know you anymore? Clearly you were raised properly and given the resources needed to always be motivated to make your bed.

Most people fail to make their bed every morning for two reasons.
1) They don’t have time.
2) They don’t care.

We at A Goodnight Sleepstore are here to tell you that both of those are bad reasons, and you need to recommit yourself to making your bed. Here’s why.

If you don’t have time…

Making your bed is exactly what you need! How are you going to control anything in life if you’re not controlling the first 45 seconds of your day? Exercise that control!

If you’re too busy to clean as you go all day, just try this once or twice. When you jump out of bed full of bad feelings like anxiety, and there’s an eternal to-do list scrolling through your brain, you can use bed-making as a mindfulness exercise. Seriously, use this minute to bring yourself into the moment.

You can afford the amount of time it takes to make your bed (as long as you do this on a morning when you’re not already late). You totally deserve that tiny indulgence. Breathe. Do a favor for the person you will be at bedtime. Pause the to-do list. Before you know it, you’ll have the sense of having accomplished something (that you never accomplish) and you’ll get the bonus of a crisp, comfy bed at night.

You’ll actually wind up making better use of your time if you take the time to take care of yourself (and making your bed is part of that).

If you don’t care…

Seriously, studies are now showing that making your bed can actually make you feel better in life. It’s like its own one-item to-do list. Bed-making is your opportunity to go 1 for 1 every single morning. How could it possibly matter which side of the bed you get out on if you have a 100% success rate?

Maintaining your physical environment is a key part of self care. We need it to feel good! Not caring about making your bed is affirming that you don’t care if things get all chaos-y. It sends the message that you don’t care about the impression your home makes on people who visit you.

Wait. There’s a third reason.

You don’t know how! Hotel corners? Folding over? Smoothing? Home Ec isn’t a thing anymore!

Lacking the skill set and knowledge base is the best reason you could possibly have for not making your bed. For about five minutes. Then you have no excuse not to either figure it out on your own or finding an instructional video on youtube. If this is your reason, you probably have two reasons — this and one of the two above. If that’s the case, hurry up and get this one out of the way.
